Gifted secondary students who also have academic learning difficulties: analytic sequential processing problems.
Some secondary gifted students display the dual exceptionalities of giftedness and a specific learning disability in literacy and/or mathematics that leads to chronic underachievement in their academic studies. This paper describes how these students have analytic sequential processing difficulties that restrict their ability to show their gifted understanding on conventional assessment tasks. It recommends how they can be assisted by directed strategy teaching.
